Elections and the media pt3

I believe the last pre-election leader's debate is on at 7:30 tonight on TV3. It may be worth watching.

Holding in mind the concept of "personalities in conflict" (discussed here) what are we wanting to find out? It's a bit late to find new angles on policy. I'll be surprised if it's anything more than polite baiting and impolite mud-slinging.

I'm interested to know what people think of John Campbell's performance. For all his weaknesses ("I love you New Zealand. Y'know, sometimes I wish I was born a woman so I could have your babies" from Facelift, from memory) he's almost certainly NZ's best TV interviewer.

This quote is from my "Questioning the Media" presentation a couple of years ago:
Journalists may also try to force their opinions and angles onto their interviewees. Some see their positions as powerbrokers, using leading questions, repetitive questions, predictive reporting (implicit and explicit), and taking quotes out of context. This leads to biased reporting. Listen to the questions that interviewers ask, and see if there are any assumptions behind the question.

So comment away...What do you think of John's performance? Does he ask fair, balanced and insightful questions? Does he manage time well? Does he request to have New Zealand's babies?
