I affirm...

After much thought, I have it!

I know I know for sure
Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang.

And that's about it.

I am not satisfied with my attempts to put into words my beliefs. I think they sound bland and colourless. However, this is the best I have come up with in the last four weeks. I've decided that love comes before doctrinal unity. Jesus claimed the world would know his disciples by their love, not their statements of faith. I guess that's moving me back towards CS Lewis and The Last Battle.

Since I've been thinking (don't go Prebble on me!) about what I affirm I've had a lot of trouble, a lot of conversation and a lot of swirling thoughts. I'm having a lot of difficulty. I want to find time to dig back into the creeds, into scripture and into God, but as it stands, I believe

  • In a creative, creator god
  • That this god is intimately interested in the earth and all beings on it...as well as any other life in the universe.
  • That this god is not us or merely a projection, although we are all part of a divine expression.
  • That Jesus of Nazareth claimed to be the 'son of man' and 'messiah' -- terms we must consider in light of first century Jewish religion -- and invited his followers to consider him thus.
  • Those that accept this and follow Jesus Christ may define themselves as Christian.
  • Church is "a community of interpretation and action called into existence by [the bible]". (I stole the phrase from Brueggemann although I don't think he wated it used this way.)
  • The primary purpose of religion is love which demonstrates theocentric justice: both individual and community.

    I know I know it's you
Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang.
