Local Politics
Hi again,
Elections are looming in Aotearoa and instigating some great discussions with friends.
For those interested in petitioning the government to fix Auckland's roads, click here.
To get an overview of the NZ voting system and Party policy, click here.
I'm a bit of a stirrer by nature, and I like few things better than a good (or good enough) cause to get my teeth into. So while considering politics over the next months, I intend to add this quote from Philip Yancey into the mix:
The collusion of state and religion is one of those big issues, but extremely timely as demonstrated by current world events. I think Yancey sums up what I'd like to say quite well.
By the way, I highly recommend his book, "The Jesus I Never Knew" from which I pulled the above quote. It's the first decent piece of modern pop-Christian literature I've read in quite a while. It's very well written, informed and thought provoking.

A political movement by nature draws lines, makes distinctions, pronounces judgment; in contrast, Jesus' love cuts across lines, transcends distinctions, and dispenses grace. Regardless of the merits of a given issue...political movements risk pulling onto themselves the mantle of power that smothers love. From Jesus I learn that, whatever activism I get involved in, it must not drive out love and humility, or otherwise I betray the Kingdom of Heaven."

Whereas a Christian political party will draws lines, make distinctions, and thrive on pronouncing judgment, all in the name of Jesus' love.
Ahhh, Church and State, such uncomfortable bedfellows (but such an important consideration in bribing the American demographs in order to win the US election).
