Narrations of Displacement at Artstation

“The Brer Rabbit stories we have grown up with as children come from an environment where rabbits are considered cute; in New Zealand they are considered a pest and endanger our agriculture on a massive scale.”

Narrations of Displacement is a group exhibition that explores the relationships between journeys and the act of storytelling. The artists explore how displacement occurs when experiences of a journey are retold at a later date.

Organiser/curator Chris Hargreaves suggests that the Brer Rabbit story is an example of displacement, this occurs when a foreign story is told in New Zealand’s cultural and social context, the same is true of a uniquely New Zealand story told in a foreign cultural or social context.

At Artstation Gallery from 1st to 18th November 2005, the artists portray their interpretations of the notion of displacement. Through painting, sculpture, objects, and photography the artists address displacement in the New Zealand Landscape, cultural traditions and visions of the future.

Artists will discuss their work in floor talks from 1pm on Saturday 5 and 12
November.
