A quick update: After releasing me from the burden of $135, the mechanic put a nice new sticker on my car...which means I can legally drive it for another six months.
I'm still considering getting a scooter though...

Yes! Get a scooter! Especially now that it's coming into summer. Even with petrol prices being what they are it only costs me a whopping $8 max to fill the tank on mine.
