Celtic Prayer
Much has been made of the emergent church's connection with Celtic practise.
I especially like the connection between Celtic tradition and maybes:
Celtic Christianity celebrates the reality of the maybe by accentuating the mystery of God. It does not turn to certainty as the only, or even the most reliable benchmark of orthodoxy. Rather, it resorts to riddle, to ambiguity, and to imaginative approaches to a God who cannot be restricted to the finite. From Celtic Exuberance in the Maybes: OST
Here's a sampling of some of my favourite songs, prayers and thoughts from the tradition...
From St Patrick...
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me;
I arise today
through a mighty strength,
the invocation of the Trinity,
through belief in the threeness,
through confession of the oneness,
of the Creator of Creation.
Based on Psalm 130:
Dark though the night,
The watchmen wait
For hint of light,
For morning's cue.
Dark though my soul,
I also wait.
To make me whole,
I wait for you.
For you, O God,
I long and pray,
And wait
As watchmen wait for day.
No, more than they!
More than the watchmen
Wait for day,
I wait for you,
O God,my stay.
From here
Sleep in peace,Sleep soundly,
Sleep in love.
Weaver of dreams
Weave well in you as you sleep.
And off to bed I go...Name of the Rose and the Eyre Affair on the boil...
